Catastrophic Injuries / Wrongful Death

Pedestrian safety is improving across the United States, with an estimated 5.4% decrease in pedestrian fatalities in 2023. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, this number marks the first decline in such statistics since the onset of COVID-19. Despite this positive national trend, the number of pedestrian deaths in 2023 remained higher than pre-pandemic levels (6412 in 2019), totaling 7,318 fatalities. Illinois performed worse than the national average with a 4.1% rise, increasing the number of fatalities from 197 in 2022 to 205 in 2023.

Safety measures helping

The report indicates that recent safety initiatives are contributing to improved pedestrian safety. These measures include lowering speed limits, constructing more sidewalks, and enhancing lighting in pedestrian areas. A comprehensive approach that integrates multiple strategies is essential for preventing fatalities.

Infrastructure projects have enhanced roadway safety, and law enforcement agencies are adopting new and innovative enforcement programs. Advances in vehicle technology have also helped prevent collisions with pedestrians. California, which saw the largest decrease in pedestrian deaths (from 1,208 to 1,057), was commended for its statewide collaboration with local governments to improve safety.

Ongoing challenges remain

While the report’s findings suggest a potential new trend in pedestrian safety as these initiatives expand nationwide, the ultimate goal of eliminating traffic deaths, as highlighted by the Vision Zero initiative, remains challenging. Data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reveals that many pedestrian deaths in 2023 occurred at night in areas lacking sidewalks, with SUVs and other large vehicles being the most involved. These recurring factors emphasize the need for continued efforts to improve pedestrian safety.

Legal considerations for pedestrian injuries and deaths

If you were injured as a pedestrian and believe someone else was at fault, or if a family member was killed in a pedestrian accident due to others’ negligence, you may consider seeking legal action for compensation.
